EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage)

Theme: Let's go on a journey

 

We’re going on a journey but where will we go?

Will it be the farm yard or will it be in the snow?

We’re sure to meet some characters some of whom you’ll know,

Rosie the hen, a family and a bear and maybe the Gruffalo!

How will we get there?

Will we need our boots or can we hop on the bus?

Wherever we decide to go please do come along with us!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This term we want to embed a sense of independent learning within the EYFS unit and for the children to value themselves as individuals. We will provide the children with many opportunities to talk about themselves and their feelings as we begin a new year. We will talk about our aspirations for the year ahead and discuss what the children would like to improve on. This will also be an opportunity for the children to try new activities and encourage them to develop new interests in the reception unit.

Communication and Language

Communication and Language is developed through everything we do in EYFS. The children have become good listeners so this term we will focus further on the children’s understanding of what they have read or heard and encourage them to ask their own questions. With the introduction of the key vocabulary created each week linked to our core story books the children will be encouraged to use new and previously learnt vocabulary from the stories they have been listening to. We will be encouraging the children to engage with non-fiction texts to support our topic this term of “We’re going on a journey.’

Physical Development

The children will continue to be given a variety of opportunities to write and mark make within the EYFS unit. The children will use spades for digging, paint brushes, chalk and spray bottles more often to develop those all-important fine motor skills. The children will embed their use of a range of large and small PE apparatus outside and inside confidently and safely. They will continue their progression of PE skills each Tuesday with Mrs Steel, this will include throwing, catching, kicking, sending and retrieving. Through playground games the children will also be developing their skills of balance, coordination and agility. We will also be thinking about team work as we create further opportunities for the children to take part in parachute games.

Literacy

In literacy we will continue to use a range of quality texts to engage the children and enhance the provision in which they learn. We will read books based around the theme of ‘We’re going on a journey’, these will include some familiar texts and some that may be new to the children, they all offer a varied insight into journeys. The books we will be reading are The Gruffalo, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Rosie’s Walk, We all go Travelling by and Mr Gumpy’s Outing.  In writing the children will have the opportunity to complete a guided task with an adult which will be used as a tool to enable the children to develop their own child initiated writing which will be further encouraged this term with the revamp of our literacy areas. The children will also be given opportunities to develop their writing skills in the other exciting areas in the classrooms. The expectation is that children will be begin to write simple sentences that can be read by themselves and others. In phonics lessons we will focus on phase 3 phonemes and develop the children’s confidence in applying both phase 2 and 3 phonemes when reading and writing. The children will read regularly using Rising Stars and Oxford Owl as a whole class and also in small groups to encourage sight reading and segmenting and blending skills.

Mathematics

The children’s knowledge and understanding of time will be further developed as we continue to do the date each day. We will be working on deepening the children’s understanding of numbers to 10. We will be teaching the children the skills to enable them to automatically recall number bonds to 5 and 10. Through everyday counting using the number line the children will develop an understanding of counting verbally to 20 and beyond. The children will compare quantities of up to 10 and also combine 2 groups of numbers.  We will learn the names of different 3d shapes and use these to create models. We will revisit the key concepts such as weight, capacity, time and length to encourage the children to use comparative language within everyday experiences including prepositions, this links nicely to the story Rosie’s Walk.  

Understanding the World

This term our focus will be on the world around us as we develop the understanding of different modes of transport and which ones would be the most suitable to travel to different places near and far. The children will be encouraged to observe, discuss and record what they can see in their immediate environment and how this may differ from where they live or places they have been. As the weather gets colder we will also be thinking about the changes within the natural world such as the differences between seasons. Through the stories we will be reading with the children we will also be discussing the past and present in their own lives, this may lead on to thinking about days out you have shared together and celebrations they have encountered in their lives.

Expressive Arts and Design

Through the development of the role play and small world areas the children will make up their own stories and narratives as well as retell well known texts. The children will be able to make their own props to support with acting out stories as well as using their imagination to use things that are available to them in an interesting way. The children will be able to make their own 2d and 3d modes of transport and also story settings, as well as make their own individual creations explaining processes they have used. The children will develop their skills in using different tools and techniques. We will also be actively encouraging the children to invent their own narratives with their peers and adults around them based around the theme of journeys.
