Phonics

Phonics at Hampton Lakes

At Hampton Lakes Primary School, we follow theLittle Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds programme.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed by Wandle and Little Sutton English Hubs and taken forward by Little Sutton Primary School and Wandle Learning Trust in partnership with other phonics and early reading experts.

This synthetic (words made up of sounds) phonics programme has been built around the updated Letters and Sounds improving rates of progress in 2021. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised also draws on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long-term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.

At Hampton Lakes Primary School, children have a daily phonics lesson. In addition to this, there are daily catch-up sessions for those that need to make rapid progress. All staff are fully trained, so children can subdivide within groups to receive targeted support.

Our daily phonics lessons follow the structure of:

Revisit/Review, Teach, Practise and Apply

Revisit – Recapping previously visited sounds and tricky words with the use of flash cards.

Teach – Introduce a new sound, building on the order of Little Wandle progression.

Practise – Using the new sound in words – spotting the new phoneme in words, modelling blending and then supporting children to read words with the new sounds from flashcards.

Apply – The children will be asked to read a sentence, identifying tricky words, previously learnt phonemes and the new phoneme for the day.

Children will then be asked to write words and/or sentences to apply the new sound to their writing.

Phonics knowledge is extremely important in enabling young children to learn to read. Please read regularly with your child at home using their Boost e-book, their Little Wandle ‘showing-off’ book and their library book.

At the end of Year 1, all children will complete the Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their ability to decode and blend 40 words containing Phase 2, 3 and 5 sounds. You will be informed of the outcome of the Screening Check at the end of the academic year. Below is a short presentation, designed to inform you on the expectations and requirements of the Phonics Screening Check that all children in Year 1 and some children in Year 2 will be sitting in June.
